Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Wednesday took oath as the 46th Chief Justice of India (CJ. Justice Ranjan Gogoi was administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi. Gogoi becomes the first CJI hailing from the Northeast state of Assam and will serve a tenure of 13 months, replacing former CJI Dipak Misra.

Justice Gogoi came into public attention after he along with three senior most judges held a revolting press-conference against CJI Dipak Misra in January over the allocation of cases to certain benches in the apex court. Justice J Chalameswar, Madan B Lokur and Kurian Joseph were among the other top judges to be present during the press conference.
Earlier, while speaking at an event in Delhi, Justice Gogoi had said that he has a ‘plan’ to bring down the pendency in the courts. Currently, there are around 3.18 crore pending cases in the courts.

Let us take a look at 7 cases which Ranjan Gogoi will take on:
1. Justice Gogoi for the first time ever in Indian history head a bench that will face a camera inside the courtroom for live-streaming of the proceedings, aimed at bringing “transparency and accountability”. However, only cases of constitutional and national importance will be live-streamed initially.
2. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) in his home state Assam would be a major case to that Justice Gogoi will face as the CJI. A bench led by Justice Gogoi has been supervising the process of updating the NRC list to identify the legal residents and migrants in the state.
3. Justice Gogoi will also decide on the setting up of special courts to specially hear and give decisions regarding criminal cases against sitting Members of Parliament and State Assemblies.
4. Justice Gogoi is also in charge of the progress in the appointment of Lokayuktas and Lokpal.
5. Justice Ranjan Gogoi is also heading a bench hearing the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) appeal against the acquittal of Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the Arushi Talwar murder case.
6. Justice Gogoi will also look into the matter and pleas against the practices of ‘nikah halala’, ‘nikah mutah’ and nikah misyar’ (temporary marriage among Shias and short-term marriage among Sunnis’.
7. Justice Ranjan Gogoi is also expected to head the bench or form a new bench regarding the Ayodhya dispute case, which is scheduled for hearing on October 29.

Son of former Assam Chief Minister Keshab Chandra Gogoi, Ranjan Gogoi was born on November 18, 1954 and completed his schooling from Don Bosco School in Dibrugarh. Gogoi persuaded his graduation in history from Delhi University’s St Stephen College.
After joining the bar in 1978, Gogoi mostly did his practice in the Guwahati High Court. On April 23, 2012, Gogoi became a judge of the Supreme Court of India.a
