New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in London on Wednesday on a four-day visit to the United Kingdom will address the Indian diaspora present in London and answer several questions raised by the citizens in a talk event titled 'Bharat Ki Baat, Sabke Saath.'

Modi, who arrived for a breakfast meeting, was greeted with the customary handshake by May.

During the meeting with May, Modi told his British counterpart that there would be no dilution in UK's importance to India even after it leaves the European Union.

“India-UK ties are diverse and extensive. Our meeting today will give new energy to bilateral cooperation between our nations,” Modi said.

Meanwhile, Modi didn't forget the important elections back home in Karnataka, where his party is facing a stiff challenge and paid tributes to Bhagwan Basaveshwara's bust located by the Thames.

"I am here on the Jayanti of Bhagwan Basaveshwara. During my last visit, I had the honour of unveiling his bust in the UK. Centuries ago, Bhagwan Basaveshwara worked towards social empowerment," Modi said.

Lingayats, who comprise 17 per cent of Karnataka’s total population, are the followers of Bhagwan Basaveshwara, a 12th-century saint. Today is his birth anniversary and the BJP would not want to miss the occasion and try to make the most of it.

“On his Jayanti, I bow to Bhagwan Basaveshwara. He has a special place in our history and culture. His emphasis on social harmony, brotherhood, unity and compassion always inspires us. Bhagwan Basaveshwara brought our society together and gave importance to knowledge,” Modi tweeted.

Karnataka will go to polls next month. The voting will be held on May 12 and the counting of votes would take place on May 15.

Although, the BJP traditionally enjoyed the support of Veerashaiva-Lingayat community it was stung by the Congress party’s move to allow a separate religion for the Lingayat community.

Months before the elections in Karnataka, the Siddaramaiah government accepted the suggestions of the Nagamohan Das Committee to grant a religious minority status to the Lingayats.

BJP’s chief ministerial candidate BS Yedyurappa, also a Lingayat termed the move “politically motivated” and party’s president Amit Shah reached out to key religious figures of the community to seek their “blessings”.

While Modi is unveiling lord Basaveshwara’s bust, Shobha Karandlaje, a BJP lawmaker from Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency said that Siddaramaiah should not be allowed to do so as he split the community.

"Mr Siddaramaiah split the Lingayat community only with an intention to gain votes and create a vote bank for his party... I request all the Lingayats and Veerashaivas to bar Siddaramaiah from garlanding Basaveshwara's statue," Karandlaje said.

Karnataka will go to polls next month. The voting will be held on May 12 and the counting of votes would take place on May 15.
