Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an immediate relief of Rs 500 crore for flood-ravaged Kerala, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Monday urged the Centre to sanction an ex-gratia of Rs 100 crore for Kodagu district too.
Addressing the media, Kumaraswamy said, "The Prime Minister has announced relief of Rs 500 Crore for Kerala, we expect at least Rs 100 Crore for Kodagu. We will request the central government for it. We have to repair roads for connectivity. We are taking help of the Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)".
"We conducted an aerial survey in Kodagu to review the flood situation. In all, 12 people have lost their lives. 845 houses have been damaged out of which 773 houses are partially damaged," the chief minister added.
As per the latest data, around 6620 people have been rehabilitated in over 40 relief camps while additional nine camps were set up in Dakshina Kannada to provide shelter to another lot.
"An adequate supply of drinking water and milk is being ensured in these camps," Kumaraswamy said.
On Saturday, the chief minister had conducted an aerial survey of landslides and flood-affected areas in Kodagu and announced ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the families which were rendered homeless.
Meanwhile, Kodagu District-in-Charge Minister SR Mahesh has requested people to send money instead of relief food material as there is no space left to store retail stuff.
Earlier, torrential rains have affected lakhs of lives in the north-eastern states, including Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland and Assam. At least 49 people had also lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh as heavy monsoon rains sparked floods and caused buildings to collapse in the north Indian state.
