The counting of votes for 105 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across Karnataka kick-started at 8 am on Monday. The result of the Urban Local Bodies, which went to polls on August 31, is expected later in the day or early Tuesday. The results for 2267 out of total 2664 seats have been declared so far. While the Congress bagged a total of 988 seats, BJP won 929 with the JD-S and independent candidates securing 375 and 378 seats respectively.

Meanwhile, talking about the latest outcomes, BJP president BS Yeddyurappa said that his party has performed way below than the expectations though he is confident about the Saffron party's victory.

Several Congress leaders, on the other hand, said that if they manage to win at least 50 per cent of the total seats along with HD Kumaraswamy's JD-S it would be a matter of great achievement for them since Municipal areas are considered to be the stronghold of BJP till the time.

Referring to post-poll alliance with the Congress to take on the BJP, a JD-S official said, "In the event of either party not getting majority on its own in the ULB elections, we will have post-poll alliance to rule the local bodies as we did to form the coalition government in the state after the May 12 assembly election threw a hung House with a split verdict".

This year, Karnataka urban local body election registered a record turnout of 68 per cent for elections to the 2,709 civic wards spanning 29 city municipalities, 53 town municipalities, 23 town panchayats and 135 wards at Mysuru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru city corporations.
