Amid the speculations of Article 370 being scrapped from Jammu and Kashmir, the government in a midnight move on Sunday placed several mainstream politicians, including former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, under house arrest. With Internet services snapped and local cable TV shut down, there is a strong buzz in the Valley that the Centre may be tinkering with special status of Kashmir. The latest developments have come in the backdrop of a massive troops build-up and an unprecedented advisory asking tourists and Hindu pilgrims to leave the state “as soon as possible”. While the central government remains tight-lipped about what is going to happen in Kashmir, we are keeping a track on all the developments taking place in the Valley. Stay with us.

3.47 pm: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Chandrababu Naidu extends support to the Centre in its move to scrap Article 370 in the Valley. "Telugu Desam Party supports the Union Govt as it seeks to repeal Article 370. I pray for the peace and prosperity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," Naidu tweeted.

3.10 pm: NSA Ajit Doval is expected to visit Kashmir valley today along with other senior security officials to review the situation on ground. NSA Doval had earlier visited Srinagar in last week of July before the implementation of decision to revoke Article 370.

11.10 am: Government silence on J-K 'criminal', say PDP Rajya Sabha MPs

The government’s silence on Jammu and Kashmir is “criminal”, PDP MPs Nazir Ahmad Laway and Mir Mohammad Fayaz said as they appealed to opposition parties for support in demanding an explanation from the government on the Kashmir issue.

In a letter written to opposition members, the MPs said that they wanted to highlight the plight of common citizens of the state.

“There is a situation of chaos and uncertainty all around. People do not know what is cooking between the top brasses of the present government vis-a-vis the Kashmir issue.

“Over the past few days we have seen some of the most irresponsible speculation regarding Kashmir, be it revocation of Article 35A, Article 370 or trifurcation of the state. Yet the truthfulness of these statements cannot be ruled out owing to the criminal silence of the central government over the same. We would like to reinforce that the Kashmir issue is a political issue and needs to be addressed politically,” they said in the letter dated August 4.

9.40 am: As the fog of mystery thickens over current Kashmir situation, former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has said that the Narendra Modi government has disembarked on a ‘misadventure’. Chidambaram took to Twitter to slam the Centre for its opaque operations and midnight drama that saw major political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir put under house arrest. “I had warned of a misadventure in J&K. It seems the government is determined to embark upon one. The house arrest of J&K leaders is a signal that the government will defy all democratic norms and principles to achieve its objects. I condemn the house arrests. Before the day is over we will know if there will be a major crisis in J&K. Keeping my fingers crossed, the senior Congress leader said on the micro-blogging site.

#01:50 am: Security beefed up in Kashmir:  Additional paramilitary forces, which arrived in Kashmir in the past few days, have been deployed across the city and in other vulnerable areas of the valley, the officials said. The strength of the security personnel has been increased around vital installations such as the civil secretariat, police headquarters, airport and various central government establishments in the city, they said. Barricades have been erected on many arterial roads, including the entry and exit points to Srinagar, the summer capital of the state. Riot control vehicles have also been kept on standby in some areas where apprehension of law and order disturbances is more, the officials added.

#12:10 am: Schools and colleges in Jammu to remain closed on Monday: The Jammu district administration asked authorities of schools and colleges to remain closed on Monday as a precautionary measure, officials said.  "All schools, colleges and academic institutions, both private and government, are advised to remain closed as a measure of caution," Deputy Commissioner of Jammu Sushma Chauhan said on Sunday night.

#11:30 pm: Section-144 imposed across Srinagar, no public movement allowed: Authorities of the Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night imposed the Section-144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which prohibits gathering of more than four people at a time. An advisory by the Jammu and Kashmir government said "there shall be no movement of public and all educational institutions shall also remain closed". It added that there will be a complete bar on holding any kind of public meetings or rallies during the period of operation of this order. 

#11:25 pm: Mehbooba Mufti placed under house arrest: "How ironic that elected representatives like us who fought for peace are under house arrest. The world watches as people & their voices are being muzzled in J&K. The same Kashmir that chose a secular democratic India is facing oppression of unimaginable magnitude. Wake up India," she said.

#11:20 pm: Omar Abdullah under house arrest: "I believe I’m being placed under house arrest from midnight tonight & the process has already started for other mainstream leaders. No way of knowing if this is true but if it is then I’ll see all of you on the other side of whatever is in store. Allah save us," he tweeted just before being put under house arrest.

#11:10 pm: Mehbooba Mufti hints curfew is being imposed: "Hearing reports about internet being snapped soon including cellular coverage. Curfew passes being issued too. God knows what awaits us tomorrow. It’s going to be a long night," she tweeted.

#11:05 pm: Omar Abdullah says he is being placed under house arrest: Former Jammu and Kashmir CM and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah says that state government officers told him that he will be placed under house arrest soon and internet services will be also be snapped.
