Kerala: Death toll rises to 26 as heavy rains cause massive destruction

The death toll in Kerala touched the 26 mark as heavy rains destroyed several parts across the southern state on Thursday. At least 26 people have lost their lives as landslides and heavy rains with 17 of them died in landslides in Malappuram and Idukki districts. The National Disaster Response Force have sent four teams from Chennai to Kerala, comprising of 45 officials each. A Central team will visit the flooded area and Army support will be deployed from Bengaluru, the home ministry said in a statement.

At least 24 reservoirs in the state have been opened due to excess water with water levels reaching its maximum capacity in various dams.

A shutter of the Idukki dam was opened for the first time in last 26 years after the water level his the 2,398.98 feet mark.

The government has urged the tourists to stay away from the dam sites and high range areas. Meanwhile, the annual Nehru Trophy boat race, which was set to take place on 11 August has been postponed due to floods.

"There is a possibility of water level increasing in Kuttanad in the district in the event of the Kakki reservoir lifting shutters. So, the boat race has been postponed. The new date will be announced later," Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the reporters, adding that the situation in the state is very ‘grim’.

A 24x7 review cell has been set up to coordinate the relief works with district collectors in the flood-hit areas.
