After the raging outrage owing to allegations against Bishop Franco Mulakkal on repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting a nun went public, the Bishop was arrested by the police. Franco Mulakkal is a senior member of the Roman Catholic clergy in India.

The police interrogation lasted for over three days after which the 54-year-old Mulakkal was arrested by the Kerala police.
The issue was raised immediately a day after the Vatican relieved him "temporarily" from the pastoral responsibilities as the bishop of the Jalandhar diocese of the Missionaries of Jesus congregation. The alleged victim also belonged to the same Missionary.

According to the Kottayam district police chief Hari Sankar, the Bishop was arrested at 8 pm. The police informed the reporters that he was taken for medical examination immediately after the arrest.
Mulakkal would be produced in a magistrate court in Pala in Kottayam district tomorrow, as per a statement released by Inspector General of Police (Kochi Range) Vijay Sakhare.
The charges against the bishop were made by the nun who accused the clergyman of repeatedly raping and having unnatural sex with her between 2014 and 2016. However, he has denied any such crime.
