Kolkata Police today arrested another accused from Delhi in connection with the hit-and-run case in which an IAF officer was killed during Republic Day rehearsal here.
Sonu alias Shanwaz Khan was arrested from his maternal uncle’s house in Delhi’s Ajmeri Gate area where he was hiding, Kolkata Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Debashis Boral, said here today.
At around 3 pm yesterday, Kolkata Police got information regarding Sonu’s hideout in Delhi and they reached the capital late in the evening, he said, adding Delhi Police’s support team helped them in making the arrest.
Sonu will be brought to the city later tonight on a transit remand from Tis Hazari court, where he was produced, Boral said.
He would be produced at a city court tomorrow.
Asked about the reason for Sonu’s arrest after prime accused Sambia Sohrab was already apprehended, Boral said, “We are yet to ascertain Sonu’s role in connection with the mishap. He (Sonu) was an accomplice of Sambia Sohrab. That is why he has been arrested.”
On whether Sonu was present in the speeding Audi which mowed down Corporal Abhimanyu Goud, he said, “We need to find out whether he (Sonu) was there in the car or not. His exact role will be ascertained after his interrogation and probe into the mishap.”
Sonu and Sambia would be questioned together, he said.
Asked about Johnny, the third accused who is still missing, Boral said another team of sleuths of Kolkata Police has been sent to a neighbouring state.
Talking about the outcome of questioning of Sambia, Boral said he was giving “false statements” to confuse the police.
On whether Sambia had confessed to being behind the wheels during the incident, Boral said, “So far he has given different statements at different times... He is deliberately doing so and we are looking at which one to believe.”
