A 50-year-old leather technologist preserved his mother’s body for the last three years in Kolkata to allegedly withdraw the pension she used to receive.
The incident came to surface after the police raided the leather technologist’s residence in Behala after his neighbours complained of regular electricity fluctuation due to high-tonnage air conditioning machine installed in the vacant first floor of his apartment.
Police have identified the 50-year-old mad has Shubharata Majumdar.
“We have arrested him and recovered his mother’s body in mummified condition from a fridge kept in his residence,” said a senior officer of West Bengal Police.
Police during their probe have learnt that Majumdar had preserved his mother’s body his his apartment for the last three years. The woman identified as Bina Majumder, a former employee of Food Corporation of India.
A senior officer part of the investigating team said that Shubharata used chemicals such as formaldehyde for preservation. “He had removed all internal organs from the body and applied the several chemicals to prevent the body from decaying,” the officer added.
The investigating team believed the man preserved his mother’s body to withdraw her pension.
“He is not working for the last five years,” the officer added.
