'Kuch toh log kahenge...,' says new Textile Minister Smriti Irani; updates Twitter profile

New Textiles Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday laughed away the questions on being shifted from the more high-profile Education Ministry as she quoted a popular song from a Hindi movie.

"Kuch toh log kahenge, logon ka kaam hai kehna,” the 40-year-old TV actress-turned-politician said in reply to the bombardment of questions.

Smriti Irani took charge as Textiles Minister on Wednesday afternoon. The move after Tuesday’s major Cabinet reshuffle is seen as a demotion for Irani, whose two-year tenure as Human Resource Development minister witnessed several controversies. Irani countered her critics saying she has got a ministry that is "the second largest employer in the country after agriculture."

"I am grateful the Prime Minister gave me the opportunity to work in this sector. Hope it will facilitate growth, I hope to give weavers full support," the new Textiles Minister said. Irani Twitter profile was updated to Union Cabinet Minister of Textiles, Government of India, soon after she took charge.
