The Ranchi High Court on Friday extended the provisional bail period of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav till August 17 on health grounds.

"Lalu Prasad Yadav's provisional bail extended till August 17 by Ranchi High Court on health grounds. He has been serving jail term in connection with fodder scam cases," the news agency ANI reported.

On June 22, the court of acting Chief Justice DN Patel extended the provisional bail period till July 3 and posted the matter to June 29 for the next hearing.

The development came after Prasad's lawyer Prabhat Kumar moved a fresh plea to the High Court seeking extension of bail given to the RJD chief on medical grounds in the fodder scam case.

Earlier, on May 11, the court of Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh had granted a six-week provisional bail to the RJD president. The bail was scheduled to lapse on June 27.

Prasad has been convicted in four cases related to the multi-crore-rupee fodder scam.
