Monsoon Session 2018: BJP blames Rahul Gandhi for Triple Talaq Bill not being passed

As the passing of the Triple Talaq Bill by the Rajya Sabha was on Friday stalled to the next Parliament session, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held Congress party president Rahul Gandhi responsible for it. The passing of the Triple Talaq Bill was strongly opposed by the Oppostion parties led by the Congress party on the last day of Parliament Monsoon session. Ultimately, as the session closed in the evening, Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu announced that the Triple Talaq Bill would not be taken up as there was no consensus over the said bill.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar told reporters that the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi are “directly responsible” for the stalling of the bill. The bill seeks to make the act of instant divorce in Islam a criminal offense. The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved three amendments to the Triple Talaq Bill. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on 29 December 2017.

Kumar, however, termed the Monsoon Session a landmark session, saying 21 bills were passed in the House which sat for 20 hours more than the allocated time.
