Forty Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans were killed and several others injured after an explosives-laden vehicle rammed into a bus of the convoy at Awantipora, in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. There were 70 vehicles in the convoy which was targeted by the vehicle being driven by a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist identified as Aadil Ahmad. The powerful blast was heard 12 km away with bodies scattered on the highway.
More than 2,500 CRPF personnel, many of them returning from leave to rejoin duty in the Valley, were travelling in the convoy when they were ambushed on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
