INX Media Case Live: CBI seeks nine more days custody of Karti Chidambaram

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant interim relief to Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, in the INX Media money laundering case, and posted the matter for hearing to 8 March.

Reports suggest that if the CBI fails to get the further custody of Karti, the Enforcement Directorate may arrest him to interrogate in the INX Media money laundering case.

The Enforcement Directorate shall be questioning former civil servants of the finance ministry in the UPA regime to look into charges of alleged collusion with Karti Chidambaram in granting approvals to INX Media.

The step is seen as a move to probe into the functioning of the finance ministry under the United Progressive Alliance government.

Karti is currently facing custodial investigation for allegedly influencing Foreign Investment Promotion Board. Officials familiar with the ongoing probe told a leading major daily that notices under relevant Sections have been issued to about half-a-dozen officials who were associated with FIPB during the period when INX secured approvals.

The agency will also question Peter Mukerjea, former director of the media group, again at a Mumbai jail in connection with the case. nPeter Mukherjea is in prison in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case and has been questioned by the ED last year.
