PM Modi holds delegations level talks with Seychelles President Danny Faure

New Delhi:

Amid rift over naval base, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold crucial bilateral talks with Seychelles President Danny Faure, who is in India on a six-day visit. During the meeting, both leaders are expected to discuss the issues of mutual interest, including defence and security.

This would be the first meeting between Modi and Faure after the latter cancelled a pact with New Delhi to build a joint naval base at its Assumption Island, which was signed by the countries during Prime Minister’s visit to the Island nation in 2015.

Before commencing his India tour, Faure, however, made it clear that the issue of the joint naval base at strategic Island will not be discussed during his meeting with Modi. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that the 2015 pact will be rectified during the meeting.

On June 4, the Seychelles president had said that the project with India “will not move forward” and the country will arrange the budget to build the naval base on its own.

The decision to cancel the pact was taken after the Opposition in Seychelles Parliament strongly opposed the Indian military base at crucial Assumption Island. The environmentalists in the country had also been protesting against the military base at the Island.
