Mumbai limps back to normal as train services, flights resume

The economic capital has started limping back to normalcy after water in some parts started receding late night on Tuesday.

KS Hosalikar, DDG IMD, said that light to moderate rainfall is expected in Mumbai on Wednesday. He further added that Mumbai is not going to see rains for few hours as the monsoon clouds have moved towards north.

Smooth traffic movement is being witnessed since Wednesday morning. The Western and Central Railway suburban train network has been resumed. Flight operations also resumed which was stopped due to inclement weather.

Local train service between Churchgate-Andheri. The first train from Churchgate to Virar started at 11:58 pm on Tuesday night. The Central Railway resumed its services from Kurla to Dombivali.But, tracks are still waterlogged at Thane railway station in early morning hours.Train services also resumed on Harbour line. 

DCP PRO Mumbai Police said roads are normal all over in the city except little waterlogging at Sion. Metro rail services have also started functioning between Andheri and Ghatkopar. The BEST PRO informed that BEST is operating extra buses from CSMT towards Thane via eastern free way on routes C8 and C42. Indian Navy came forward in rescue operations and distributed breakfast and tea to people at CSMT station. The Navy community kitchens are providing food at Churchgate, Byculla, Parel, CST, Worli, Tardeo,  Mumbai Central, Dadar,   Mankhurd, Chembur, Malad and Ghatkopar.

Schools and colleges have been asked to remain shut by authorities amid indications of a fresh spell of heavy showers in the megapolis. The city and its suburbs virtually have a public holiday today with Maharashtra Chief Minister DevendraFadnavis advising people to stay back home unless there is an emergency.

Mumbai received 298 mm of rainfall over a period of 9hours yesterday, nine times more rain than the average, an IMD official said.

The spell of heavy rains is likely to continue on Wednesday as well, he added. Traffic on the Eastern and Western Express highways, the two key arterial roads in Mumbai, which was crawling at a snail's pace on Tuesday, is slowly returning to normalcy.
