Polling for the sixth phase of UP elections and first phase of Manipur polls ended on Saturday. For 49 assembly seats in UP, nearly 57.03% voter turnout was recorded. This phase 6 of total 7 for Uttar Pradesh elections and phase 1 of 2 for Manipur.

The last phase of polling will be held on March 8 and counting will take place on March 11.

Seven districts of eastern UP going to polls face a stiff battle between Samajwadi Party, which won 27 seats in the region last time, and BJP looking to win big with intensive campaigning along with underdog BSP, which was a second with 9 seats in last assembly elections.

Manipur has a direct face-off between Congress and BJP, with Naga peace accord and three-month long economic blockade being the chief issues.

Star-studded war in eastern UP

Phase 6 elections in eastern UP are high stake for all parties because the reputation of most senior leaders are stake. Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Lok Sabha constituency Azamgarh may be poll-bound in this phase, but the SP patriarch has done little to favour his son’s battle.

Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency has 10 assembly seats, of which SP had won nine in 2012, but this time Mulayam has not addressed a single meeting in his parliamentary constituency.

The prestige of Union minister Kalraj Mishra, who represents Deoria in the Lok Sabha, too is at stake, besides that of Adityanath.

BJP is contesting 45 seats and its ally Apna Dal one.  Another BJP partner Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party is contesting 3 seats.

While BSP has fielded candidates on all 49 seats, SP is contesting 40 seats and Congress 9 seats under an alliance.

Electoral issues in Manipur

In the run-up to the election for the 60-member House, all political parties in their campaigns mainly focused on the continuing economic blockade imposed by the United Naga Council and the state government’s inability to break it.

The other important issues which hogged the attention of the political parties are alleged lack of development, massive corruption, misappropriation of funds and worsening law and order in the state.
