A slew of festivals are likely to cause more inconvenience to the public who have already been thronging ATMs to get a hold of their money on account of the ban on old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Banks in several states in India remained closed on account of Gurupurab on Monday.

The bank holiday is listed in Reserve Bank of India’s annual leave calendar. Banks across nation had remained open on Saturday and Sunday to facilitate exchange of old defunct notes with valid denominations. ATMs, however, are functioning.

However, the two days saw numerous reports of scuffles and violent incidents along with loss of life reports in bank queues as people had to wait in line for tedious hours, in some cases from 2am.
