UP civic polls 2017: Voting begins for second phase amid tight security (Source: ANI)

The second phase of polling for UP civic body election began amid tight security on Sunday. The voting is taking place in 25 districts including Prime Minister’s constituency Varanasi.

The voters are exercising their franchise for six municipal corporations which are- Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, Aligarh and Mathura.

# Voting for the second phase of local body elections in Uttar Pradesh begins

In April, the Adityanath government had elevated the status of Mathura to Nagar Nigam along with Ayodhya and Faizabad.

There are 83 candidates for the post of Mayor in Lucknow, Varanasi, Mathura-Vrindavan, Ghaziabad, Allahabad and Aligarh Municipal Corporations.

The districts which will be going for polls are Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Amroha, Rampur, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Aligarh, Mathura, Mainpuri, Farrukhabad, Etawah, Lalitpur, Banda, Allahabad, Lucknow, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar, Bahraich, Shravasti, Sant Kabir Nagar, Deoria, Ballia, Varanasi and Bhadohi. 

The third and last phase will be held on November 29 and counting of votes will take place on December 1.

Over 52 per cent voting was recorded in the first phase of the Uttar Pradesh civic polls on Wednesday, with the Congress bastion Amethi logging a high turn out of 68.44 per cent and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath'shometurf Gorakhpur registering the lowest.
