The nation mourned and thousands of supporters and loved ones thronged the funeral service and bid tearful farewell as Tamil political icon and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M Karunanidhi made his final journey and was laid to rest at the Marina Beach in Chennai on Wednesday. Striking down opposition, the Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the last rites of Karunanidhi to be performed at Marina Beach in Chennai, observing that there was no legal impediment in providing a place at Marina Beach as sought by the party. Meanwhile, scores of DMK cadres and Kalaignar followers have joined the funeral procession near the beach. Karunanidhi breathed his last on Tuesday evening at Kauvery Hospital in Chennai.
