The verdict in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections is finally out. The Congress party has emerged victorious winning 114 seats, just two short of the majority mark in the 230-member Assembly. For the Congress to form the government, the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party can play kingmakers. Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav’s parties have two and one seats, respectively. The four Independents could also be a key factor in the government formation. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was ousted from the power as they managed to get only 109 seats. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan won from his Budhni constituency with 1,23,492 votes. As many as 12 ministers from the previous BJP government lost their respective constituencies. Chouhan has been ruling the state since 2005.

On Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath wrote to Governor Anandiben Patel, staking claim to form the government in the state. The party claimed it had the support of the Independent candidates also. "The Congress party has emerged as the single largest party with a majority support.
"As the president of Pradesh Congress Committee, I seek an appointment with your Excellency late tonight, as soon as the results are officially declared along with my senior leaders to apprise you and seek your permission to form government in the state of Madhya Pradesh," Kamal Nath wrote in the letter.
On Tuesday night, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had declared victory in Madhya Pradesh, saying it was time for a change and that the party would take forward the development work. "This is a victory of Congress workers, small traders, farmers. This is a big responsibility for Congress party and we will work on this... We are going to provide these states a vision. We are going to provide these states a government that they can be proud of," Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference.
The election was held in Madhya Pradesh on November 28 and 75 per cent of the state's 5.03 crore voters exercised their franchise, with around 1.64 lakh people having voted on an average in each constituency. In the previous election in 2013, the BJP had won 165 seats while the Congress got 58.
