Senior Congress leader KC Venugopal on Tuesday said Jyotiraditya Scindia has been expelled from the Congress for "anti-parties" activities. "Congress President has approved the expulsion of Sh. Jyotiraditya Scindia from the Indian National Congress with immediate effect for anti-party activities," the Congress general secretary said in a statement.

The statement came nearly an hour after Scindia resigned from the primary membership of the Congress. He shared a photograph of the resignation letter on his twitter handle. "As you well know, this path that has been drawing itself out over the last year," Scindia said in the letter dated March 9. "Having been a primary member of the Congress party for the last 18 years. It is now time for me to move on. I am rendering my resignation from primary membership of the Congress and as you well know this is a path that has been drawing itself out over the last year," Scindia wrote in his letter.

Scindia and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath have fallen out over the post of the state Congress president, which is currently held by the CM. The Congress government in Madhya Pradesh plunged into a crisis on Monday as a sulking Jyotiraditya Scindia, along with 17 MLAs, virtually revolted prompting Chief Minister Kamal Nath to call a late-night cabinet meeting where around 20 ministers resigned reposing faith in his leadership.

Sources in Delhi said former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan may be elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party in the meeting on Tuesday. Chouhan, they added, has briefed the top party brass, including its president J P Nadda, about the developments in the state.

The party had sent a list of 20 to 22 names, including that of national general secretaries Ram Madhav and Kailash Vijayvargiya, to its central poll panel to pick two candidates for the RS polls. Members of a state's Legislative Assembly vote in the Rajya Sabha elections.
