Madhya Pradesh: Cow vigilantes thrash man in Ujjain, police makes four arrests

A man was allegedly thrashed by cow vigilantes in Ujjain. A case has been registered in this matter and four people have been arrested.This is not the first time that cow vigilantes have taken the law in their hands. A number of assaults have been conducted by these self-styled protectors of the animal which is considered sacred by many Hindus.

Earlier in April, a mob had brutally thrashed five men in Alwar for transporting cows in Alwar, Rajasthan. One of the men, Pehlu Khan, who belonged from Haryana, had died from the assault.

The police had made a number of arrests in that case also. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had also issued notices to the Centre and the Rajasthan government over the lynching in Alwar.

Terming the incident as “painful” and “serious violation” of human rights, the commission said the “self-proclaimed” volunteers are creating an atmosphere of fear in the society.

Earlier in March, chaos had prevailed at Jaipur's Sindhi camp area after a group of cow-vigilantes had gheraoed Hotel Hayat Rabbani while shouting patriotic slogans to demand strict action and staff.

Cow-vigilantes have been heavily criticised by the Congress and other opposition parties. In 2016, Congress activist Tehseen S Poonawalla had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court, seeking direction to the Centre and some states to take action against so-called 'Gau Rakshaks'.

Even BSP chief Mayawati had asked PM Modi to ensure strict action against those indulging in attack against Dalits in the name of cow protection.
