Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Nana Patole rejected the discussions on a demand to bring a resolution to honour Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (Veer Savarkar) on his death anniversary on Wednesday. It is to be noted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earlier today submitted a formal request in the state Assembly to introduce a resolution to honour Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
During the Question Hour in Maharashtra Assembly, BJP’s Sudhir Mungantiwar asserted that remembering Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary is equally important as are the proceedings of the House. He said, "This is a wish of Balasaheb Thackeray and there is no politics in this demand. The CM Uddhav Thackeray-led state government should not force us to bring such resolution."
Before the Assembly proceedings, Mungantiwar had said, “Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis, will urge the chief minister to bring a resolution on Veer Savarkar. However, if it fails, we will move a motion to honour Savarkar.”
BJP's demand for a resolution to honour Savarkar is viewed as a move to corner Shiv Sena, which shares power in the state with NCP and Congress. It is worth mentioning here that the Uddhav Thackeray-headed Shiv Sena, a former ally of the BJP, has been demanding Bharat Ratna honour for Savarkar.

In view of Maharashtra Assembly polls, BJP had promised to push for Bharat Ratna to be awarded to Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in its manifesto. The BJP won 105 seats in the 288-member assembly followed by the Shiv Sena (56). The NCP won 54 seats and the Congress had won 44 seats. However, the internal fight between BJP and Shiv Sena
