Maharashtra: Gau rakshaks beaten black and blue by mob in Ahmed Nagar

A mob of around 50 “armed” persons has allegedly attacked gau rakshaks in Ahmed Nagar district of Maharashtra. The gau rakshkaks were beaten black and blue after they along with police intercepted a tempo allegedly taking cows to a slaughterhouse.

According to the police, 7 gaur rakhshaks were seriously injured in the incident and a case of attempt to murder has been registered at Shrigonda police station.

The police have also arrested tempo driver Raju Fatrubhai Shaikh and owner Wahid Shaikh under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act.

According to the Indian Express, a man named Shivshankar Rajendra Swami, who claims to be a legally appointed officer for animal welfare along with 11 other gau rkashaks were on vigilance for illegal transportation of cows and spotted a tempo transporting cows illegally to an animal market in nearby Kashti village.

After intercepting the tempo, they called the police and rescued Ten oxen and two cows, Swami claimed.

“Around 6 pm, when we left the police station, where some media persons had also gathered, a mob of about 50, with some carrying sharp weapons and stones, attacked us, leaving some of our activists injured. The assailants also robbed gold chains of some activists. Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation,” the leading English daily quoted Swami as saying.
