India is celebrating 148th anniversary of the Father of Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on Monday. He played a key role in India’s freedom struggle. The government of India has launched some schemes, programmes and campaigns named after him.

Mahatma Gandhi’s 148th birth anniversary: Take a look at Govt programmes and schemes named after him

India is celebrating 148th anniversary of the Father of Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on Monday. He played a key role in India’s freedom struggle. He started movements including Khilafat Movement, Champaran and Kheda Satyagraha, Non-cooperation Movement, Quit India Movement and Salt Satyagraha Movement – Dandi march. The government of India has launched some schemes, programmes and campaigns named after him. Take a look at those schemes:

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA)

Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, also known as MNREGA, was launched in 2006 as National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA). It is an Indian labour law which aims at providing guarantee employment for 100 days to adults in rural areas of the country.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, also known as ‘Clean India Mission’, is a campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2, 2014, soon after forming the government in the Centre. This campaign aims at cleaning the roads, streets and infrastructure of the country. It is divided into Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin), under Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Urban), under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana

Mahatma Gandhi Bunkar Bima Yojana was launched in December 2003 as ‘Bunkar Bima Yojana’. The objective of this Yojana is to provide insurance cover to the handloom weavers in case of natural or accidental death and total or partial disability.

Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana

Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Suraksha Yojana was launched by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in order to provide social security including Pension and Life Insurance to the Indian workers working overseas in possession of Emigration Check Required (ECR) passports.

The aim of this Yojana is to help out the overseas workers to meet their financial needs, which include saving for retirement, saving for return and resettlement, and free life insurance.

Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti and Gandhi Shilp Bazaar

Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti and Gandhi Shilp Bazar are the two institutions started by the government of India. The main objective of Gandhi Smriti & Darshan Samiti is to propagate the life, mission and thoughts of Mahatma Gandhi. On the other hand, Gandhi Shilp Bazaar works at highlighting and promoting poor and small artisans or craft persons and avoiding their exploitation.
