A man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor in Baburhat area of Cooch Behar district, police said today.
Kachua Miya (32), a rickshaw-puller, was arrested by Kotwali Police station on January 7 for allegedly raping the minor girl, a resident of the Sahid Bandana Smrity Mahila Abas in Baburhat area of the district, Coochbehar SP Sunil Yadav said.
Acting on the order passed by the Child Welfare Committee on January 4, Coochbehar Police arrested the accused.
Yadav said that medical tests suggested that the minor was pregnant.
Noticing Miya frequently visiting the home and mixing with the minor girl though he was not an employee there, the owner suspected that something was wrong and informed the local women’s police station.
Miya was earlier working as a sweeper at the home and was sacked, the SP said.
“We are looking into the matter and a probe has been initiated into it,” Yadav said.
