The Maharashtra Police on Tuesday arrested Maoist ideologue Varavara Rao for allegedly plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rao was arrested from Hyderabad and shifted to a government-run hospital for medical examination, according to sources.

Rao, a revolutionary writer, would be produced before a local court in Hyderabad before being shifted to Pune.

The Maoist ideologue was arrested in connection to a letter mentioning Modi’s assassination, which was recovered by a team of the Pune Police in June 2018 from the house of one of the five Bhima Koregaon violence accused.

Rao's name was mentioned in the letter that revealed the plan to kill Modi on the lines of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. The letter also mentioned the requirement of funds worth Rs 8 crore to buy an M-4 rifle and four lakh rounds to execute Modi's assassination plot.

However, Rao had strongly denied all the allegations and claimed that all the five people arrested in the Bhima Koregaon violence case were working for oppressed people.
