The police were trying to evict activists of the Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik Kranti Satyagrahi from Jawahar Bagh on the orders of Allahabad High Court. The encroachers have been camping there for the past two years.

The leader of the activists, Ram Briksh Yadav was the main culprit behind the clash. Not only Yadav, the security officer of the group, Chandan Gaur, was involved in the killings.

The Kranti Satyagrahi describes itself as a social group and has been making demands such as replacing the Indian currency with the Azad Hind Fauj currency and selling 60 litres of diesel and 40 litres of petrol for Re 1.
