Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greeting of Eid-ul-Fitr. "Greeting on the auspicious occasion of Id-ul-Fitr... May this special day ignite the spirit of harmony, compassion and peace in our society. May everyone be blessed with happiness (sic)," the prime minister tweeted.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended Eid greetings and hoped the festival would bring peace and happiness for everyone.

"Extend my warm greetings on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. May this festival bring peace, joy and happiness in everyone's life," he tweeted.

Earlier on Tuesday, President Ram Nath Kovind greeted fellow citizens on the eve of Eid.

"Marking the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan, this festival strengthens our belief in charity, fraternity and compassion," he said.

The President said, "On this day, let us re-dedicate ourselves to these eternal values that characterise our civilization."

Eid, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan, is being celebrated across India today as the moon was sighted on Tuesday evening.

Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari made the announcement after a meeting of the moon-sighting committee here.

"The moon was sighted today. That means Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday in Delhi and other parts of the country," a senior official at the city's historic mosque told PTI.

Eid-ul-Fitr symbolises peace and brotherhood. The festival is marked with feasts and the faithful offers prayers at mosques and idgahs to seek blessings of the divine.

People, especially children dress up in their traditional fineries to mark the festival.
