Rahul Gandhi is known for making candid remarks. So, it came as no surprise when he made a witty statement over his formal resignation as Congress chief. Talking to media today just after he was granted bail in the RSS defamation case, Gandhi said that, “aakraman ho raha hai, maza aa raha hai (people are attacking aggressively, but I’m loving it).” When prodded over his resignation, Gandhi said that, “whatever I had to say, I have already said.” But he also said that he is firm on his fight ‘ideological fight’ with the BJP and the RSS. “I will continue the fight with 10 times more vigour than I did during the last five years," he added.
The statement comes a day after Gandhi official resigned as Congress chief after month-long drama. Earlier, the Congress leadership had rejected his resignation saying that Gandhi is the only one who can lead the party. In fact, some suggested that the party had done well under Gandhi’s command. Statistically speaking, this is a valid argument. Because, the Congress did better its 2014 tally.
Taking moral responsibility of the party’s poor performance in the recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections, Gandhi resigned form top post and said that ‘accountability is critical for the future growth of our party’.
"As President of the Congress party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party," he said in a letter that was put on his Twitter account.
"It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress President."
"Rebuilding the party requires hard decisions and numerous people will have to be made accountable for the failure of 2019. It would be unjust to hold others accountable but ignore my own responsibility as President of the party," the letter reads.
Gandhi had said that while it was important for someone new to lead the Congress, "it would not be correct for me to select that person".
The grand old party won 52 seats in the Lok Sabha election. Two days after the results of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 were announced, Gandhi had resigned from the post. The CWC rejected his resignation and authorised him to initiate changes in the party in order to revamp and restructure it at all levels.
