The ruling Congress in Meghalaya, which is enjoying a wafer-thin majority in the 60-member Assembly, has reportedly petitioned the party high command on attempts allegedly being made to create rift within the party.

A national news channel today claimed it has accessed an internal note sent by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in which it was alleged that senior Congress leaders including state party chief D D Lapang and two cabinet ministers have held meetings with BJP leaders.

When approached, an irate chief minister who was camping in the Garo Hills region questioned not only the authenticity of the report but the way they got access to his private emails. “How did they have access to such confidential matters which were sent from my private email?” Sangma told the channel.

He went on to add that the current leadership knew very well on how to insulate their government from such dissidents. The Congress has 30 MLAs, majority of whom are still loyal to the chief minister.

Senior Congress leader and two-time MP Vincent H Pala said the party is like a “big family and small problems will not necessarily create abnormal situation”.

Pala asserted there is no division in the House and therefore there will be no repeat of what happened in Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and said the party is only cautious of any prospect of BJP’s imposition of President’s Rule.

The MP also said that the party wants unity as this is very crucial and the party needs to stay united ahead of the 2018 assembly elections.
