Meghalaya Police have seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition after a fierce gunbattle with Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants in South Garo Hills, police informed the media on Monday.

A senior police official not authorised to talk to the media said that the encounter between security forces and GNLA militants took place in Chokpot area.

The officer also claimed that several GLNA militants have suffered serious bullet injuries in the last Sunday gunbattle.

The officer added that GLNA militants managed to escape into the dense jungle taking benefit of the darkness.

Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma said, “The operations against the GLNA militants was launched on specific intelligence inputs.”

“We had inputs that the GLNA militants in large numbers were camping in Chokpot area. The militants opened fire on the security forces. Our team retaliated forcefully. The militants escaped leaving behind their arms and ammunition,” added the SP.

The Meghalaya Police have recovered one AK-47, 3 magazines, 90 rounds of AK ammunition, one light machine gun and SMG ammunition from the encounter site. Security forces have also recovered day-to-day used materials including camp materials from the spot.
