With Mufti Mohammad Sayeed demise, the Jammu and Kashmir will see a huge storm in the state politics. With BJP as its ally in the state things can go haywire a bit. The former CM was one of the most recognised politician in the country. But for the people of the state, his daughter Mehbooba Mufti is great leader.
Mehbooba, is likely to be sworn in as J-K’s first woman chief minister following her father’s death.
A law graduate and single mother to two daughters, first contested polls in 1996 as a Congress candidate.
In 1996, when Sayeed was Congress chief in the state could not find many people to represent the party, so he had to field his wife Gulshan Ara and daughter. The electoral process started after six years of Governor’s rule. Many lost but Mehbooba was from South Kashmir seat.
As none of his other children were interested in politics Mehbooba, eldest of the four siblings, inherited her father’s political legacy.
Mehbooba was behind Sayeed’s success in last state polls as he became the CM of state for the second time.
In 1999, Sayeed decided to part ways from Congress and build his own party, it was junior Mufti who took the onus of building a new party in the state.
Donning her conventional phiran and sports shoes, she visited many houses of victims of militants and security forces. She showcased herself as alternative of Abdullah’s in the state. She started grabbing the headlines in state and centre.
In 2002, the PDP formed the government in the state with the help of Congress. Along with MP and PDP co-founder Tariq Hamid Karra, played an important role in getting Congress into the box.
During 2014 polls, she led the party to win 3 seats in general and 28 seats in state polls. Her political knowledge led the party to a famous victory in the state.
