Mehbooba Mufti welcomes Centre's Kashmir initiative, Congress says ‘muscle power’ failed

New Delhi:

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti welcomed the decision of Union government to start a sustained dialogue with all stakeholders including separatists to resolve Kashmir issue.

“Dialogue is a necessity of the hour and the only way to go forward,” Mehbooba Mufti tweeted minutes after Home Minister Rajnath Singh made the announcement.

She said, "this dialogue initiative is in line with PM Narendra Modi's 15th August speech ‘na goli se, na gaali se, Kashmir ki samasya suljhegi gale lagaane se’."

Home Minister on Monday appointed former IB Director Dineshwar Sharma to lead the dialogue process with all the stakeholders on behalf of the Govt of India.

Reacting to Centre’s decision to appoint an interlocutor to engage with all stakeholders in J&K, Congress leader P Chidambaram said the Modi govt has admitted that ‘muscle power’ has failed in Kashmir.

“With appointment of interlocutor, I hope government has finally admitted 'muscular approach' has failed in J&K,” Chidambaram said.

"From "No talks" to "Talks with all stakeholders" is a major victory for those who had strongly argued for a political solution in J&K," he added.

National Conference leader and former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also echoed similar to Congress and said, “the acceptance of the political nature of the Kashmir is a resounding defeat of those who could only see use of force as a solution.”

“What does this mean for the NIA investigation in J&K? Will investigation be suspended to facilitate dialogue with detained Hurriyat leaders?” Abdullah tweeted.
