Metros continue to rule the list of most popular destinations for overseas travellers visiting India in the first half of 2016, as Delhi, Chennai and Mumbai continued to occupy the top three positions for two consecutive years, a Hotels.com report said.

The capital city of India, New Delhi, has bagged the number one spot as the most preferred Indian destination for overseas travellers, followed by the metropolitan city of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and the financial capital of the country, Mumbai, respectively, according to Hotel Price Index (HPI) by Hotels.com.

Other popular destinations for travellers included India’s cultural hub Kolkata (West Bengal), Bengaluru (Karnataka), Hyderabad (Telengana) and Pune in Maharashtra occupying the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth positions, respectively.

Goa, the beach and leisure destination of the country continued to be the fourth most preferred destination among foreign travellers while Agra in Uttar Pradesh has secured the 10th spot.

Kochi in Kerala moved out of the top 10 preferred destinations, making way for Ahmedabad in Gujarat as the new emerging destination preferred by international tourists occupying the ninth spot.

Meanwhile, Indian travelling overseas in the first half of 2016, preferred Bangkok in Thailand followed by New York in US, Las Vegas (US), Pattaya and Phuket (Thailand).

The top ten list also featured Barcelona in Spain, Guangzhou (China), Jakarta (Indonesia), Madrid (Spain) and Cape Town in South Africa.
