After facing severe criticism from the various state governments, the Narendra Modi government has finally decided to roll back its controversial order to ban the sale of cattle including cows from animal markets for slaughter.

According to the sources, the move to roll back the controversial ban was made after the Environment Ministry sought feedback from several states on the notification.

In their response, the states have informed the government that the ban has severely dented the dairy farming, leather production and beef export, sources said.

Although, the government has reportedly aggreed to lift the ban in principle but hasn't yet decided on its timming.

Earlier in May this year, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change had ordered a ban on the sale and purchase of cattle in the animal market for slaughter.

The move sparked a massive row with the Opposition accusing the Modi government of forcefully imposing their own ideology on the people of the country.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee had termed the ban as undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Other states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka also opposed the government’s decision and even knocked the doors of courts.

On Karnataka government’s petition, the Madras High Court stayed the implementation of the government’s ban order.

In July, The Supreme Court also ruled that the stay order of the Madras HC against the ban was operational and extended the stay to the entire country.
