A BJP MP from Aligarh Satish Kumar Gautam on Tuesday wrote a letter to the vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, asking him to explain why a portrait of Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah was hanging inside the campus.
“I have heard a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah is hung inside the campus. Kindly gather more details on this and give reasons behind it,’ Gautam wrote to the vice-chancellor of the varsity.
After the BJP leader’s objection, Aligarh Muslim University came out with a clarification and said the Jinnah was awarded an honorary degree in 1938 and the administration had nothing to do with it.
“In 1938, Muhammad Ali Jinnah came to Aligarh University & he was given an honorary degree like to many others by the union. The administration had nothing to do with it,” Shafey Kidwai, PRO Aligarh Muslim University.
