Muslim women over the age of 45 years can now go on Haj pilgrimage without a close male relative or ‘Mahram’’informed Union Minority Ministers Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The decision was taken in a Haj review committee, headed by retired IAS officer Afzal Amanullah. The Haj committee has made several recommendations.

“Women can now go on Haj pilgrimage without their Mahram,” said Naqvi.

The union minority minister further added that Indian Muslim women can go on Haj pilgrimage without any male relatives if they are travelling in a female group.

“Some Muslim sects don’t allow women travel without a mahram. But, many sects do allow. Allowing woman alone for Haj pilgrimage is completely will be decision of the family,”added Amanullah.

The union minister added that the Saudi authorities earlier had permitted the government to employ the norms.

“The Haj committee of Indian will consider implementing the woman travelling alone for Haj Pilgrimage will be implemented from next year,” said Amanullah.
