New Delhi:

After the Chandigarh stalking case, a similar kind of incident happened in Mumbai on late Monday night. A 37-year-old man, who is an IT professional, was detained by the police for allegedly stalking a woman.

According to the victim’s complaint (who is a fashion designer by profession), Nitesh Sharma allegedly followed her for nearly 45 minutes and turned up at her doorstep. He stood outside her building, which forced the woman to call a security guard for help. She registered an FIR against Sharma, who was later arrested by the police from his residence.

The victim was returning home with her friend in a car when Sharma started following her. The accused had come to the city four days ago from Hyderabad, police said.

“When… (the designer) went to a friend’s building to pick up her two children, Sharma was not allowed to enter the building. He waited outside…. When her car left the building, he continued following her,” assistant police inspector Daya Nayak said.

“The security guard, assuming he had come with the designer, asked him why he was waiting there when she had already gone to her first-floor residence. He also mentioned the flat number. Sharma then went up to her floor and rang her door bell around 2 am,” he added.

The victim then opened the door and queried about him. The accused said that he wanted to talk to her. After his response, “She then yelled at him and called the security guard,” the official said.

“Scared, Sharma rushed down and left the building. He parked his car outside her building, in front of her balcony. He kept staring at her flat and smoked,” he said. The accused later fled from the spot after the security guard questioned him. The very next day (Tuesday), the woman approached a local police station and registered a case under Section 354 of the IPC, he added.

“When we tried to track the registration number of the vehicle, it turned out to be incorrect. Eventually, we managed to track the car and arrested Sharma from his residence on Tuesday,” the official said.
