A 26-year-old youth was shot dead after he challenged a gang robbers who attempted to gang rape his friend in the outskirts of Mumbai on Monday evening, police said on Tuesday.
Police further said, the robbers after shooting the youth, gang raped the woman in her early twenties.
A case has been registered against unknown criminals by Titwala police station under relevant IPC sections.
Maharashtra Police have identified the deceased as a chef and a resident of Shahpur.
Police said, the deceased and his friend were on a joyride, when they were stopped by the gang of robbers near Nalimbi village in Thane area.

“Few members of the group tried to sexually assault the woman, on challenging them one of the robbers pumped in bullets into the deceased’s body,” said a police officer.
He added that the group later raped the woman. The victim with help of a passersby reached Titwala police station. “A team rushed to the incident site and shifted the victim to a nearest hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” added the officer.
