The incident reportedly occurred in Ghatkopar east fish market in the eastern suburbs late Wednesday night when the accused, Gopi R Ghaware snatched and ran off with a woman’s 25 gms gold chain.

As the woman screamed some of the marketers chased and pinned down the thief.

After this, police was called-in which first conducted a X-ray of the thief which showed a metal object inside the body. In a weird treatment to the case, police reportedly force-fed the thief around 48 bananas, who finally excreted the swollen chain in the morning ablution.

This is not the first time Mumbai police has carried out a probe in this way to recover a stolen good.

Last year also, a thief was fed five dozen bananas and liquids in an unsuccessful attempt to retrieve a Rs 60,000 gold chain whose large pendant got stuck in the food pipe.
