Nag Panchami or Naag Panchami is a Hindu festival that is celebrated during the Hindu month of Savan. Traditionaly on this day snakes are worshiped. According to Hindu Calenda, snakes are offered on the fifth day of bright half of Lunar month of Shravan (July/August).
This year, Nag Panchami will be celebrated in most states on July 27.
While various several serpent Gods are worshiped on Nag Panchami, twelve snakes, in particular, are offered prayers. It includes Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya, Takshaka, and Pingala are the twelve snakes that find mention in the Hindu scriptures.
Traditionally, during Nag Panchami, Hindu women offer milk, sweets and flowers to snakes in the hope that the Lord of the Serpents, Nag Devata, will look upon their prayers favourably.
