Delhi High Court directs CBI to trace missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take necessary steps to trace Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmad, who went missing on October last year.

The court gave its direction after examining the CBI’s status report — details of the steps taken by the probing agency to trace the student.

A bench of Justices GS Sistani and Chander Shekhar said, “We direct the CBI to take all necessary steps to trace the missing person who is missing since October 15, 2016."

The Delhi High Court also asked CBI the reason for placing the status report in a sealed cover.

In reply, the CBI counsel said that they did not want witness names to be revealed. They also informed the court that the agency examined 26 persons which includes Najeeb’s friends, JNU officials, staff, colleagues and those who had issues with him.

The court was hearing a plea from Najeeb's mother, Fatima Nafees, who moved to the court on November 25, 2016 to trace her son, a first-year MSc Biotechnology student who went missing from the Mahi Mandavi hostel in JNU.
