Almost two years after the mysterious disappearance of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) - India’s premier investigating agency – on Tuesday gave up to the probe and told the Delhi High Court that it wanted to file a closure report in the case.
The CBI – whose integrity and competency is often under the scanner, told the high court that it had conducted the probe all the aspects but could not find any trace of the missing JNU student. The high court has reserved its order.

Meanwhile, Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees has sought the closure report filed by the agency and demanded re-investigation in the case. Earlier, she had said that she will move to the Supreme Court if the CBI closed the case.
Najeeb, a first year MSc Biotechnology student in JNU had gone missing on 15 October 2016 from his hostel in the university campus, a day after he was allegedly assaulted by the members of ABVP – BJP’s student wing. His mother and the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) have been claiming that his disappearance was linked to the assault on him by ABVP students.

The CBI, however, had told the court that the Najeeb’s disappearance was only a “missing” person case as it had not found any evidence to support the claims of any crime.
