A national level woman volleyball player was hacked to death in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district during a practice session on Friday evening, reports said. 16-year-old Sangita Aich was stabbed to death with a sharp weapon allegedly by a stalker at Natun Pukur locality and fled, Superintendent of Police Tanmay Roychowdhury said.
Aich was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the assailant.
Sangita Aich had played volleyball twice at the national level and thrice at the state level. The attacker has been identified as 20-year-old Subrata Sinha. According to police, Sinha was reportedly furious over Aich spurning his advances several times.
On Friday evening, Sinha arrived at the practice camp and wanted that Aich speak to him, said police. She refused to meet him, following which he advanced towards her carrying a cleaver. According to reports, Aich’s coach, Swapan Das, tried to save her, but Sinha managed to hack her to death.
“If Tina had stayed with me, he would have had to kill me first. And he may have too,” Das was quoted as saying.
Sinha, who is also a national-level volleyball player, then fled the spot. According to Aich’s relatives, Sinha allegedly threatened her on several occasions in the past.
