Navjot Singh Sidhu, who recently resigned as a BJP parliamentarian is likely join the Aam Aadmi Party on August 15, Independence Day, say sources.
Earlier, Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur said his resignation from the Rajya Sabha meant he has also quit the BJP. She also said that the only option left for him was to join the Aam Aadmi Party.
However Sidhu has been dodging questions on his future plans if he will join AAP or not. During his press conference, Sidhu said that he resigned because Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asked him to stay away from Punjab.
Sidhu’s sudden resignation from BJP may have major implications on the upcoming Punjab Legislative Assembly Elections 2017.
The 52-year-old former cricketer, who had a long innings with the BJP in Punjab, has alleged that the party had asked him to stay away from Punjab to serve "personal interests".
Sources in the AAP said Sidhu will formally join the party next month, possibly in the second week of August. He is likely to be inducted as a "star campaigner" ahead of the assembly polls next year.
AAP is giving a tough fight to the ruling BJP-SAD alliance and Congress in Punjab, and is hoping to cash in on Sidhu's popularity to bolster its chances in the state election.
