The fifth day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata. People offered prayers on first four days as Maa Shailaputri, Maa Brahmacharini, Goddess Chandraghanta and Devi Kushmanda.
She is the mother of Lord Kartikeya who is also called Skanda and her name comes from him (Skanda is another name for war god Kartikeya). Maa Skandamata symbolizes the mother form of Goddess Durga and is benevolent and kind.
