Re-enacting the final moments of the braveheart, Neerja Bhanot, Sonam Kapoor in 2016 delivered one of her finest performances in Ram Madhvani’s Neerja that led to the masses gaining more vision into who the Pan Am hero was. A martyr, today she is remembered as a face of bravery laying down her lives for the 359 other passengers on the Pan Am Flight 73 that was travelling from Mumbai to New York on September 5, in 1986.
Here is the last recorded voice of Neerja before she was gunned down by armed terrorists belonging to the Abu Nidal Organisation.
To honour Neerja for her brave act that even earned her a posthumous ‘The Heroine of the Hijack’ nickname, she was awarded the Ashok Chakra award in 1987, making her the youngest and first woman recipient of the Ashoka Chakra. She was just 23 when she laid down her life.
