Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Saturday said it is important for the Congress to have a prominent member of the Nehru-Gandhi family in the leadership of the party. He exuded confidence that the party would be revived soon with Sonia Gandhi at the helm.
“Just like me, thousands of Congress leaders and workers feel that it is important for the party to have an important member of Nehru-Gandhi family in the leadership of the party.
“I think outsiders should not dictate us on who should be our leader or what kind of leader we need,” Khurshid said at the sidelines of a programme in Kolkata.
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on August 10 had appointed Sonia Gandhi as the interim chief of the party after her son Rahul Gandhi quit the post taking responsibility of the humiliating defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress party had requested Rahul to reconsider his decision but after his denial, the CWC unanimously passed a resolution requesting Sonia Gandhi to take over the post of party president pending the election of a regular President by the AICC.
Sonia Gandhi, who first became the Congress chief in 1998, had voluntarily relinquished the post for her son Rahul Gandhi in 2017 after leading the party for nearly two decades. Rahul, however, didn't have a decent tenure as Congress chief and had to face defeat in several state and national elections. He quit the post following the Congress party's abysmal show in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
